HANDSPUN YARN SKEIN COMPETITION

 

RULES

  • Each skein must be spun by the entrant alone.
  • Each handspun skein must contain at least 2 ounces of yarn. The skein must be wound into 1 to 2 yard hanks and loosely tied, using figure eight-style ties, in a minimum of three places.
  • Skein must be clean and free of odors.
  • A skein may be entered in only one class and a maximum of two entries per person per category. 
  • You may enter as many categories as you wish.

EACH ENTRY MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY:

Entry fee and entry form (forms must be filled out completely when registering or entry will be disqualified)

An index card attached to the item (hole punched in card with a string attached to the skein). On the card you must print:  

  • the category number

  • the fiber content of skein with approximate percentages

  • if skein is wool, please state breed of sheep if known

  • the technique used in construction and information about the processes you used - for example, self-dyed, self prepared (carded or combed), self-blended, etc.

  • for Locally Produced Bonus, please provide proof of origin - for example, a bill of sale, statement from producer...  

 

CATEGORIES

1.   Single ply - Fine

2.   Single ply - Medium

3.   Single ply - Bulky

4.   Two ply - Fine

5.   Two ply - Medium

6.   Two ply - Bulky

7.   Multi-ply - Any weight

8.   Novelty Yarn - Any weight

9.   Drop spindle – single or plied and any weight

 

REGISTRATION - Please register your handspun between 9:00 - 11:30 am on Saturday morning.  

If you cannot register on site, skeins may be mailed to Skein Competition c/o Dianne MacDonald, 4565 Cummins Ferry, Versailles, KY 40383.  Skeins must be received no later than Saturday, May 8, 2010, and must include entry fee.  Please enclose a SASE with appropriate postage or a note indicating the skein(s) will be claimed after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, at the Festival.

ENTRY FEE - $2.00 per skein to be paid at time of registration.

AWARDS - Ribbons and premiums of $10 for first place, $5 for second place and $3 for third place will be awarded in each category, where appropriate.          

A Locally Grown Bonus Award sponsored by Mike and Dianne MacDonald, Tanglewood Farm, will be given for any first, second or third place spun with locally produced fiber (must have proof that fiber was produced in the state of Kentucky).

Skeins will remain on display until 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 16 and may be picked up after that time. Those not picked up become the property of the Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival. The Festival assumes no liability in regard to skeins entered in the competition being lost, stolen or damaged.
