YARN10            Beginning Spinning & Yarn Basics/Instructor:  Lori Malloy

Description of Workshop:  This workshop is for the beginner spinner who wants to learn more about crafting the right yarn for the right project.  Discussion will cover the considerations in designing yarn, properties of different fibers and how fiber blends can affect the end use.

Materials Needed:   Bring spinning wheel and chair.

 There will be supplies for sale.  Roving (in 4 oz. center-pull bumps) in blends of alpaca, merino (ecru and dyed), bamboo and more.

 

SPIN01                       Learn to Spin – Guaranteed! /Instructor:  Leslie Bebensee

Description of Workshop:  Hand spinning 101 – learn to spin and on a spindle.  It’s handy, portable and so much cheaper than a wheel.   Individual guidance through your first efforts along with explanations of how/why spinning works.  Try it!

ACID11                       Dyeing Yarn with Acid Dyes/Instructor:  Jan Durham, the Insightful Knitter

Description of workshop:  Students will learn to hand paint/dye wool fiber.  We will be dyeing yarn and/or roving in the microwave.  I will show several techniques that will achieve different results.  I will take the process from beginning to end showing how to prepare the wool for various results.

Materials Needed:  Bring 3 to 4 skeins wool yarn – any weight (prefer natural).

SANTA05            Needle Felted Santa/Instructor:  Norma Jean Campbell

Description of workshop:  Make and take a lovely traditional or Old World Santa home with you.  This class is designed for the beginner or the more experienced felter.

PAN18             Felting in a Cake Pan/Instructor:  Jan Durham, the Insightful Knitter

Description of workshop:  We will be wet felting in a cake pan.  We will go through the entire process of taking the wool from roving to finished fabric.  You can make a small picture, hot pad or piece of fabric to make into an item of your choice.

Skill Level:  Children 10 and up are welcome.

Materials Needed:   All materials will be supplied.   

There will be other supplies for sale.

 

RUG16                        The Shepherd’s Rug/Instructor:  Ann Brown and Letty Klein

Skill Level:  Students must know how to braid hair and have basic sewing skills.

 

Description of Workshop:  This workshop is for the fiber artist and with a closet full of fiber, the shepherd wishing to make something from their wool sheep and the hand-crafter looking to add warmth and a decorative flair to their home.  Students will learn how to braid roving, felt the braids, and sew the braids into a beautiful, functional heirloom rug.  Students will complete a simple chair pad, using minimal equipment, from their roving or ours.  The techniques learned can be used to create their own beautiful rugs at home.

Materials Needed:  Students can bring own roving or purchase from instructor.  Bring 2 or 3 colors.  Need 1 pound of roving.

There will be supplies for sale.


 

BATTS12            Carding for Art Batts/Instructor:  Stephanie Stratton of LunabudKnits

Material Fee:             $10 (includes a sampling of several types of fibers that give Art Batts their unique style), Material Fee is optional.

Skill Level:  Basic drum and hand carding skills are recommended, but not required.

 

Description of workshop:  Have you ever wondered how multi-fiber art batts are created or are you tired of plain Jane batts?  Carding for Art Batts will take you beyond the basics of carding and into the wild and sometimes wacky world of color and blending.  You will also learn how to make punis and diz your own roving from the drum carder.

Materials Needed:  Bring drum carder and/or hand carder.  One extra drum carder will be available on a first come, first serve basis.  Students are encouraged to bring their own fibers. 

Hand carders will be available for purchase.  There will be various wool tops and blending fibers for sale.

 

SLIPPERS03            Needle Felting Slippers/Instructor:  Lanette Freitag

Description of workshop:  Start with felted insoles and use pre-felts to build a colorful and cozy pair of slippers.

Materials Needed:  Bring and old shoe, the size you want for slippers.

LOOM15            Beginners Weaving:  Rigid Heddle Loom/Instructor:  K. Traci Bray

Class Fee:       $195 (includes instructions, handouts, wool yarn for 2 scarves, 2 cones of Maysville cotton and a 6.5” rigid Heddle lap loom)

 

Description of workshop:  In this class you will learn everything you need to become a basic weaver.  You will learn about the technical aspects, how to make a warp, dress a loom, and start perfecting your technique.  We will also go over problems you might encounter and how to fix them.  You will be weaving a sampler with wool yarn and leave with your loom warped for a cotton table-runner.   In the morning, you will learn basic terminology, identify the parts of the loom, winding the warp, dressing the warp (warping), loading the shuttles and basic weaving.  In the afternoon, you will learn finishing, calculating weft and warp, warping loom, solving problems, ideas for additional projects and question and answer session.

Material Needed:  Bring a 3-ring binder, a simple calculator and the excitement of learning. 

 

DYE04                        Foundations of Dyeing/Instructor:  C.J. Bloomer

Description of workshops:  Foundations of dyeing is a class intent on exposing students to the basics of protein fiber dyeing.  Utilizing dyes with no heavy metals that are lightfast and eco-friendly, students will learn the techniques of hand-painting and kettle dyeing.  Each student will receive a dye kit that will dye 14 lbs. of fiber with 9 different colors, 4 oz. Roving and 100 yards of wool yarn that you will dye in class to take home.

Materials Needed:  Bring safety glasses, and waterproof rubber gloves.

Description of workshop:  Students will be creating a sheep pin to wear.  You will be needle felting and embellishing the pin.  If you do not wear pins, I can go over how to make it into an ornament.  You will be able to do either with this project.  You can be a novice to expert for this project.  I just would like for everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves!

Materials Needed:  Nothing to bring. 

There will be supplies for sale.

           

BASKET06            Traditional Wool Drying Basket/Instructor:  Bonnie Scherer

Skill Level:       Students should be at least 16 years of age or accompanied by a helpful adult.

Students should have some hand strength. 

Description of workshop:  The wool drying basket was used by women in an earlier day to dry wool in front of the fireplace.  I set the basket next to my wheel and use it hold clean/picked wool for carding.  The basket is about 18” long, 14” across and 12” high including the feet.  It has an open weave base and sits on wooden legs.  This is traditional and was used to allow the air to circulate and help the wool to dry.  There is a wooden bushel handle on each end.  We will not use glue or nails to make this very sturdy basket. 

Materials Needed:  Bring craft scissors, a tape measure and a small flat head screwdriver.                      


KNITTING19            10 Ways (Plus1) to Improve Your Knitting/Instructor:  Arenda Holladay

Skill Level:            This course can be taken by beginners on up.

Description of workshop:  This course provides 11 practical ways to improve your knitting.  Topics covered include selecting appropriate fibers, how to measure gauge and selecting increases and decreases appropriate to projects. 

Materials Needed:  Students should bring needles and light colored worst weight yarn.  There is homework and students can contact me by email arendje@aol.com   the homework is a gauge swatch.    If a student does not want to do the homework, contact me a week before the class and I will do the homework for an additional $10. 

 

 

STITCHES20            The Where’s and How’s of Picking Up Stitches/Instructor:  Arenda Holladay

Description of workshop:  This course covers the correct way to pick up stitches.  It includes a section on double band pick ups.
