Service Description
Brioche knitting creates a unique fabric that can result in beautiful garments, but the unusual characteristics of this fabric come with their own challenges and considerations. In this class you will learn about what makes brioche garments unique and how to select patterns and yarns that best highlight the unusual features of this fabric. You will learn best practices for swatching in brioche, and how to block your finished item. You will also practice some of the unusual techniques that can help polish a brioche garment, such as brioche short rows, mattress stitch on brioche and picking up stitches on a selvedge edge. By the end of the class, you’ll have the tools and techniques needed to confidently cast on—and complete—the brioche sweater you’ve always dreamed of. This is an intermediate/advanced knitting class. Students must be comfortable with basic brioche knitting flat. Students need to bring: Two contrasting colors of DK or worsted weight yarn (stash leftovers are fine, solids or semisolids recommended), 16-in US7/4.5mm circular needles or size appropriate for your yarn, second set of circular needles of the same size, darning needle, homework swatches. Prior to the class: Knit two swatches as follows: Cast on 25 sts using a long tail cast on and color A (I recommend using your lighter color). Slide the work to other end of needle to work RS with color B. Setup Row (color B, RS): K1, sl1yo, (p, sl1yo) repeat to last st, sl1 wyif. Turn to work color A. Brioche Rib WS (color A): K1, (brp, sl1yo) to last 2 sts, brp, sl1 wyif. Slide. Brioche Rib WS (color B): K1, (sl1yo, brk) to last 2 sts, sl1yo, sl1 wyif. Turn. Brioche Rib RS (color A): K1, (brk, sl1yo) to last 2 sts, brk, sl1 wyif. Slide. Brioche Rib RS (color B): K1, (sl1yo, brp) to last 2 sts, sl1yo, sl1 wyif. Turn. Repeat the two Brioche Rib rows until the piece measures at least 4 inches (remember that a row worked in color A, then worked again in color B are counted together as one row), then work the Brioche Rib WS row. Bind off using color A and the following stretchy bind off: k2, slip both sts back to the left needle, k2togtbl, *k1, slip both sts back to the left needle, k2togtbl, repeat from * to end of row. Cast on a third swatch as described, working at least 1 inch. Bring swatch still on the needles. This class is for adults only. $20 Non-refundable registration fee included in class cost.
