Service Description

Socks are popular knits for all the obvious reasons: takes one skein of yarn, small project, a (relatively) quick knit and the perfect size to carry around and knit on the go. Knitting socks is also practical; socks keep your feet warm. A well fitted hand-knit sock is sublime. Once you experience the perfectly fitted sock: slides over your foot, fitting like a second skin, but soft and warm, you will never wear commercially sized socks again. How do you obtain the perfectly fitted sock? Simple, know what to measure, where to measure and how to turn those measurements into the number of stitches to cast on. Practice: All students will learn to measure and record the measurements of their own foot. Students will learn the formula to apply foot measurements and swatch gauge to determine the number of stitches to cast on. Using worsted weight yarn, we will review techniques (casting on, heel turn, etc) on a mini sock. Necessary Materials: A sheet of copier paper (8x11) Pencil Tape measure Ruler Worsted weight yarn (approximately 50g) Needles appropriate to yarn for knitting in the round Paper and pencil, if you like to take notes The Homework! Skill Level: Appropriate for advanced beginners. Must be able to cast on and knit in the round (dpns or circular needles) with ease. Homework to be done before class: Knit a swatch in stockinette. I recommend using a sock yarn (fingering weight) and a needle size between 1.75mm and 2.5mm. The swatch should have a horizontal measurement of 5 inches and a vertical measurement of 5 inches. Wash the swatch following the care instructions on the yarn label. It is important that the swatch is washed in the same manner as you will wash the finished socks.
